The country’s top political advisory body will play an active role in advancing the development of the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area, and step up exchanges among youths from the Chinese mainland and the Hong Kong and Macao special administrative regions.

It was the first time Wang had delivered the annual work report of the Standing Committee of the CPPCC National Committee since he became chairman

The pledge was made by Wang Yang, chairman of the 13th Chinese People’s Political Consultative Committee National Committee, who also took note of the committee’s long-standing commitment to full and faithful implementation of “one country, two systems” and of “Hong Kong people governing Hong Kong” and “Macao people governing Macao” with a high degree of autonomy.

His remarks came at the opening ceremony of the second session of the 13th CPPCC National Committee on Sunday, attended by some 2,000 members in the Great Hall of the People in Beijing.

It was the first time Wang had delivered the annual work report of the Standing Committee of the CPPCC National Committee since he became chairman, and also the first time that support for the Bay Area development was included as part of the CPPCC National Committee’s annual work plan.

The top political advisory body will make suggestions to help achieve the vision outlined by the central government for the Bay Area, the blueprint of which was unveiled on Feb 18.

Wang said the CPPCC National Committee will continue to support Hong Kong and Macao students in pursuing their study on the mainland. It will also advise on further promotion of youth exchanges between Hong Kong, Macao and the mainland.

Reviewing the work of 2018, Wang said the CPPCC National Committee had been engaged in extensive policy consultations regarding the Bay Area’s development. Hong Kong and Macao members of the top political advisory body had traveled to the mainland to enhance mutual understanding, while youth groups from the two SARs had also undertaken exchange tours to learn about the mainland and the nation’s latest developments.

Wang added that the CPPCC National Committee firmly opposes Hong Kong independence, and encourages the committee’s Hong Kong and Macao members to staunchly support the governments and chief executives of both SARs in administering their cities in accordance with law.

Last year, the CPPCC organized visits to five cities and provinces, during which it presented talks and discussions about guidelines spelt out by President Xi Jinxing during his meeting with the Hong Kong and Macao SAR delegations, which visited Beijing to celebrate the 40th anniversary of the nation’s reform and opening-up.
