Although Hong Kong Arts Festival is still more than six months away, select highlights of the city’s flagship annual cultural event are up on the web already.

Connoisseurs of the opera could look forward to Richard Wagner’s Tannhauser, a collaboration between Oper Leipzig, Opera Vlaanderen and Teatro La Fenice di Venezia.

Hamburg Ballet will present an updated version of The Nutcracker, as well as a celebration of the masterful choreography by John Neumeier.

Cloud Gate Dance Theatre of Taiwan will stage excerpts from dance pieces choreographed by the legendary Lin Hwai-min (left photo) over five decades.

Canadian theater personality Robert Lepage will appear on stage in 887, a play he’s written and directed.

Worth watching out for are the HKAF-commissioned new productions. Written by Loong Man-hong and directed by Lee Chun-chow, Gangsters of Hong Kong casts light on the everyday lives of triad members. Playwright Roger Lee and director Tang Wai-kit have collaborated on the musical theater Always by Your Side. Singer-songwriter Endy Chow joins younger colleagues Yau Hawk-sau and jamie zhang on stage.

One jump ahead

A large-scale interactive installation made up of a variety of white steel frames and inflatable giant balls could be just the place to go with friends and family if you’re looking for some action on a weekend summer afternoon. Bounce is brought to Hong Kong by Snarkitecture, a New York-based collaborative practice established to investigate the boundaries between art and architecture.
