HONG KONG – An application for a fare increase for Star Ferry has been approved by the Chief Executive in Council of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region (HKSAR), according to a press release issued by the HKSAR government on Wednesday.

The fare adjustment will apply to two routes, namely Central-Tsim Sha Tsui and Wan Chai-Tsim Sha Tsui, and take effect on Jan 25, 2027. Adult weekday fares will be capped at HK$6 (about $0.76) and weekend fares at HK$8.3, while the monthly ticket price will remain at HK$190.

A spokesperson for the HKSAR government said the fare adjustment was necessary as the ferry operator faces persistent financial challenges and rising costs. The operator has been encouraged to improve its long-term financial viability through a multipronged approach to continue providing quality services to passengers and to preserve this historical landmark.

Running cross-harbor ferry services since 1898, Star Ferry is a key icon of Hong Kong. After the fare increase, it will still be a rather affordable means of cross-harbor public transport.
