Ukraine: 24 killed in Russian attack on energy sites, infrastructure

KYIV– At least 24 people were killed and dozens injured in a Russian drone and missile attack targeting energy and infrastructure facilities across Ukraine, the Ukrainian authorities said on Wednesday.

In the northern city of Pryluky, 18 people, including four children, were killed and 55 injured when a missile struck a building, the State Emergency Service said.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky said two people were killed in Kyiv and four more in the central cities of Kremenchuk and Oleksandriia.

Overall, infrastructure in Kyiv and 12 regions came under attack, Zelensky said, adding that energy infrastructure was among the key targets.

The attack involved about 70 missiles, including cruise, anti-ship and ballistic missiles, as well as 130 drones.

According to Ukraine's Air Force, air defenses intercepted 117 drones, 39 cruise missiles and five ballistic missiles. 

Russia strikes Ukraine's Flamingo missile facilities

Russian forces carried out multiple overnight strikes on Ukrainian military-industrial enterprises in several regions, including Flamingo missile facilities, the Russian Defense Ministry said on Wednesday.

In Kyiv and the surrounding region, three enterprises used for the assembly and storage of FP-5 Flamingo cruise missiles and FP-9 missiles as well as drone production and assembly were hit.

The strikes also targeted facilities producing and storing components for FP-5 Flamingo missiles in Pryluky of the Chernihiv region and Lozova of the Kharkiv region; a drone component workshop in Oleksandriia of the Kirovohrad region; a rocket and space enterprise in Dnipro of the Dnipropetrovsk region used for the production, storage and supply of Flamingo missiles and drones; and some others.

On the maritime front, a ship repair plant producing and storing naval drones and their components was struck in the port of Izmail, while a dry cargo ship delivering military supplies was hit in the port of Odesa.

Erdogan, Putin discuss Black Sea navigation safety

Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan and Russian President Vladimir Putin discussed efforts to ensure the safety of navigation in the Black Sea during a phone call on Wednesday, according to a statement from Türkiye's Presidential Directorate of Communications.

Erdogan stressed the importance of ongoing efforts to safeguard navigation in the Black Sea, where security incidents have raised concerns over maritime traffic, the statement said.

The Turkish leader also said Türkiye stands ready to contribute to efforts aimed at initiating direct contacts between Moscow and Kyiv, as it maintains dialogue with both Russia and Ukraine and has sought to facilitate diplomatic efforts related to the ongoing conflict.

The latest call comes amid heightened attention to maritime security in the Black Sea following recent incidents involving Turkish-linked commercial vessels in the region.
