Prime Minister Mark Carney’s Liberals swept three special elections on Monday night, strengthening the Canadian leader’s hand domestically as he defends against President Donald Trump’s tariffs.

Two of the elections — one in the Toronto suburbs, the other just north of Vancouver — were to reclaim seats previously held by the Liberals, and Carney had been expected to win both.

The third race, a district called Chicoutimi — Le Fjord in the French-speaking province of Quebec, had been held by the Conservative Party since 2018.

Liberal candidate Daniel Gobeil’s victory was declared by the Canadian Broadcasting Corp at around 10:47 pm in Ottawa.

Gobeil is a dairy farmer who has lobbied for the sector’s protectionist quota system — a major trade irritant for Trump. Monday’s result shows Carney still has solid backing among Quebec voters, whose support was crucial to his general election victory in April 2025.

Trade talks between Canada and the US broke down on Aug 21, resulting in Trump imposing new 50 percent tariffs on a range of Canadian goods and Carney rolling out his own retaliation plan.

Monday’s result also represents another blow to Conservative Leader Pierre Poilievre, who is Carney’s chief political rival but who has languished behind in public polling since the 2025 election.

Over the past year, four Conservative lawmakers have defected to Carney’s Liberal Party, as well as another from the left-wing New Democratic Party.

Monday’s election result represents yet another district flipping to the Liberals in Canada’s 343-seat Parliament. It adds to Carney’s majority hold on the chamber, allowing his government to pass legislation more easily.

The Liberals will now enter the fall parliamentary sitting holding 173 seats, while the opposition parties have a total of 166. A handful of seats remain vacant and will likely be filled by special elections later this year.

In the other two races, Liberal candidate Tanveer Shahnawaz won the Toronto-area district of Beaches–East York, while Braeden Caley — a former senior aide to Carney — won for the Liberals in North Vancouver–Capilano.
