KABUL – Nearly 5 million mothers and children in Afghanistan will require urgent nutrition support this year, the UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) reported on Monday, underscoring the deepening humanitarian crisis gripping the war-stricken country.

"For millions of mothers in Afghanistan, it means holding on to hope despite the threat of malnutrition," the Afghanistan office of the OCHA posted on its X account.

It stressed that timely humanitarian action can still save lives and prevent long-term damage to a generation already scarred by years of crisis.

The alert comes just days after the UN Children's Fund raised similar concerns, stating that 3.7 million children under the age of 5 are at heightened risk of severe acute malnutrition.

Afghanistan continues to grapple with one of the world's largest humanitarian crises, driven by economic collapse, climate shocks, and restricted access to essential services.
