In celebration of Earth Month this April, Hong Kong Disneyland Resort (HKDL) has rolled out a series of initiatives that brings together sustainability, community engagement, and everyday actions for environmental good.
Creative reuse gives cast costumes a second life
HKDL joined hands with St. James’ Settlement Jockey Club Upcycling Centre to host a series of upcycling workshops for cast members. In one of the workshops, “Upcycle Magic: Costume Reborn Workshop,” around 120 Disney VoluntEARS creatively gave retired costumes a second life by transforming them into specially designed Mickey and Minnie Mouse headbands and bag-charm plushes.

Through hands-on crafting, cast members meticulously measured fabrics and hand‑sewed each piece, reimagining familiar costume elements into meaningful keepsakes. Beyond promoting sustainability by giving new life to materials, the workshop also embraced social inclusion by having people with disabilities supported by St. James’ Settlement serving as assistant instructors, fostering collaboration and meaningful interaction within an inclusive community setting.
Tim Sypko, managing director, HKDL, said, “As the resort celebrates its milestone 20th Anniversary, we introduced brand‑new costume designs to mark The Most Magical Party. This workshop was a precious occasion to transform costumes that had accompanied our cast members since the park’s opening into meaningful keepsakes, while reinforcing the importance of sustainability and community connection.”

Throughout the month, cast members and their families have also taken part in a range of Earth Month activities supporting both community and environmental well‑being. These include creating coasters from upcycled office materials, helping to collect unsold bread for those in need, learning about wetland conservation through rice paddy volunteering, and connecting with senior community members on a horticulture “Green Tour.” Together, these initiatives reflect HKDL’s commitment to creating positive impact through everyday actions that benefit both people and the planet.

Advancing environmental‑friendly infrastructure across the resort
Alongside community‑based initiatives, the resort continues to advance environmental sustainability through the adoption of greener operational hardware, including Hong Kong’s first and largest car park solar canopy, reinforcing HKDL’s long‑term commitment to integrating sustainability across its operations.
HKDL marked a major milestone in its clean energy journey with the completion of the solar canopy at the cast members car park in early 2026. The project features approximately 400 bi‑facial solar panels and provides shelter for 80 parking spaces. For the first time, the resort has adopted bi‑facial solar panels capable of capturing around 10% more energy compared with traditional single‑sided panels, generating over 200,000 kilowatt‑hours of electricity annually across the project.

Building on last year’s electrification of the Main Street Taxi, HKDL has successfully converted a second Main Street vehicle — the Paddy Wagon — to electric power. The vehicle is now in service, following official commencement by HKDL Ambassadors Charlotte Wong and Daniella Rocca, together with the Facility Services team.

In parallel, HKDL is converting its diesel shuttles into an electric shuttle bus fleet in phases. Each electric shuttle bus is expected to reduce carbon emissions by around 65%, equivalent to approximately 30 tons of carbon dioxide emissions per year. All electric shuttle buses will be lower‑deck vehicles to ensure accessibility, while minimal operational noise will enhance the passenger experience through quieter and smoother journeys.
To further support waste reduction and cleaner recycling, HKDL has deployed new smart recycling bins at the Inspiration Lake Recreation Centre, making it easier for guests to recycle effortlessly. Designed to reduce contamination and improve recycling outcomes, the smart bins are equipped with sensors that transmit real‑time data, such as fill levels, enabling optimized collection schedules and more efficient operational monitoring, and enhancing overall recycling services across the area.
Industry recognition for environmental excellence
HKDL’s environmental efforts continue to receive recognition from industry bodies. The resort recently received its first international environmental accolade from the Association of Energy Engineers, earning the “Corporate Energy Management Runner Up – International Award” in collaboration with CLP Power. HKDL also garnered Gold recognition at the Hong Kong Awards for Environmental Excellence for the third consecutive year, and was recognized under the Outstanding ESG Enterprises Recognition Scheme 2025, affirming its continued progress in environmental stewardship.

As a regional tourism flagship and long‑standing member of the Hong Kong community, HKDL remains committed to taking meaningful and measurable actions to support a healthier planet, while inspiring positive change through collaboration, innovation, and everyday operations.
