More than 1.25 million cross-border trips were recorded for entry and exit Hong Kong on Christmas Day, the special administrative region government’s Immigration Department revealed on Friday.

Of the total number of trips on Thursday, arrivals exceeded 457,000, about 83,000 of which were made by travelers from the Chinese mainland.

Departures reached about 795,000, with more than 664,000 of those involving Hong Kong residents, authorities said.

The Lo Wu Control Point, a land checkpoint that connects to Shenzhen via the MTR East Rail Line, was the busiest crossing for both inbound and outbound travel.

The Immigration Department had estimated that Hong Kong's checkpoints will handle a total of about 11.52 million cross-border trips during the Christmas and New Year’s holiday periods — Dec 24 through Sunday, and Dec 31 through Jan 4.
