HK para-swimmers clinch gold, silver, set national record

Hong Kong para-swimmers Cheung Ho-ying and Chan Yui-lam have won the gold and silver medals in the women’s 100m breaststroke swimming SB14 event at the 12th National Games for Persons with Disabilities and the 9th National Special Olympic Games, with Cheung setting a new national record of 1:19.51.

The race took place in Shenzhen on Wednesday morning. Both athletes established a clear lead by the halfway point, with Cheung pulling ahead of Chan in the final stretch and winning by less than half a body length.

Cheung said she was happy with the victory, adding she would strive for another strong performance in Wednesday evening’s final in the Women’s SM14 200m individual medley in which the two Hong Kong athletes will also contest.

Chan, with a time of 1:20.15, also said she was satisfied with her performance. It’s her second silver medal at the Games following her earlier second-place finish in the women's S14 200m freestyle events.

Another Hong Kong para-swimmer, Karen Tse Lam-yan, finished fourth in the race.

The 12th National Games for Persons with Disabilities and the 9th National Special Olympic Games are being held across the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area from Monday until Dec 15.

The Hong Kong Special Administrative Region will host four events, including three Paralympic events -- boccia, wheelchair fencing and table tennis (Class TT11), and one Special Olympics table tennis round.

The Macao SAR is hosting the badminton competitions.
