Tai Po blaze: More than 1,700 families receive financial assistance

More than 1,700 families affected by the deadly fire in Tai Po have received HK$10,000 ($1,284) in emergency financial assistance and will get an additional $50,000 allowance starting this week, an official said Monday.

Under Secretary for Home and Youth Affairs Clarence Leung Wan-ching told a radio program that 1,760 families were given the HK$10,000 emergency cash subsidy after more than 1,900 households registered for it.

In addition, the government will also provide a living allowance of HK$50,000 to each affected household this week.

The families of deceased victim will also receive a token of solidarity of HK$200,000 and HK$50,000 for funeral expenses.

A massive fire killed at least 146 residents at the Wang Fuk Court housing complex in Tai Po on Wednesday and police said the death toll might go up as they set to search three more charred blocks at the housing estate.

As of noon Sunday, the Support Fund for Wang Fuk Court in Tai Po established by the government HK$900 million in donations, apart from the HK$300 million provided by the government, bringing the total to around HK$1.2 billion.

The fund will be used to assist residents in rebuilding homes and providing long-term support.

Meanwhile, the Food and Environmental Hygiene Department will arrange staff members to assist each family of deceased victims.

The government will waive fees for columbarium and related services, and provide HK$50,000 to the families of each deceased person through the "one social worker per household" service to cover funeral and related expenses.

The FEHD has set up a service counter at the Fu Shan Public Mortuary and will contact the families to offer assistance.
