MOSCOW/WARSAW – The Kremlin on Wednesday expressed regret over Poland's decision to shut down the last remaining Russian consulate, saying relations between the two countries have "completely degraded".

The TASS news agency quoted Kremlin Spokesman Dmitry Peskov as saying that Warsaw is effectively trying to reduce diplomatic ties with Moscow to zero.

His remarks came after Polish Foreign Minister Radoslaw Sikorski said Poland had revoked permission for the Russian Consulate General in Gdansk to operate.

"This is probably another manifestation of this degradation, a desire by the Polish authorities to eliminate any possibility of consular or diplomatic relations," said Peskov. "This has nothing to do with common sense.”

Earlier, speaking at a press conference the same day, the Polish foreign minister said the closing of the consulate in the northern Polish city was not Poland's full response to what he called hostile actions by Russia.

Poland had repeatedly warned Moscow that its diplomatic and consular presence would be further reduced if such activities continued, he said.

The Russian Embassy in Warsaw will remain open. "We do not plan to sever diplomatic relations with Russia," he added.

An explosion that occurred last weekend on the Warsaw-Lublin railway was described as an act of sabotage by Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk. He told the parliament on Tuesday that two Ukrainian men, acting on behalf of Russian intelligence, were responsible for the sabotage.

Such accusations against Russia are "completely baseless and unfounded," Russian news outlet RIA Novosti cited Peskov as saying on Wednesday.
