BEIJING - China's Lin Shidong and Wang Manyu, respective men's and women's singles second seeds, both enjoyed comfortable victories in their opening matches at the World Table Tennis (WTT) China Smash on Monday.

Defending champion Lin withstood late challenge from Tomislav Pucar of Croatia, winning 11-7, 11-5, 12-10.

"I just want to take it game by game, without thinking too much about the outcome," Lin said after his win.

Chinese qualifier Chen Junsong caused the biggest surprise of the day, going the full distance to overcome world No 4 Tomokazu Harimoto of Japan 8-11, 12-10, 11-8, 8-11, 11-9.

"Trailing 9-5 in the decider, I didn't think too much about the result. When I pulled within 9-7, I took an upper hand on the mentality en route to the win," 111th-ranked Chen commented.

In an all-Chinese clash, Liang Jingkun emerged victorious 15-13 in the first game, while Wen Ruibo restored parity with 11-5 in the second. Liang showed no mercy afterwards, triumphing 11-4, 11-2 to secure his win.

Chen Yuanyu saw his lead slip away twice against Germany's Dimitrij Ovtcharov, while holding his nerve to triumph 13-11 over the former world No 1 in the deciding game.

"In the decider, I tried to keep up with him on the scoreline, and I was more resolute on clutch points," Chen explained.

Lin Gaoyuan and Yuan Licen also advanced to the men's last 32, while Huang Youzheng suffered a full-game loss to Frenchman Thibault Poret.

On the women's side, Wang Manyu dispatched compatriot He Zhuojia 11-8, 11-8, 11-6.

"As we are teammates and familiar with each other, I made full preparations for this match," Wang said. "At the China Smash, every opponent is strong, so I need to prepare well for what lies ahead."
