MOSCOW - A fire broke out at a transformer unit on the premises of the Kursk Nuclear Power Plant in Russia's Kurchatov, local media reported Sunday.

According to a statement from the plant's press service, the transformer unit was operating at a 30 percent capacity and is not the nuclear power plant's core infrastructure, reported REN TV.

The fire has not affected the local electricity supply, which continues to operate normally, the statement said. Firefighters are working to bring the blaze under control, and authorities have confirmed there is no threat to public safety.

The cause of the fire is under investigation.

Meanwhile, Russia said  on Saturday that, over the past 24 hours, it shot down four Ukrainian guided aerial bombs and 160 drones. The Russian Defense Ministry said its air defense systems intercepted 33 Ukrainian drones over the country's western border regions.

"On-duty air defense systems downed 13 Ukrainian fixed-wing unmanned aerial vehicles, 12 over the Bryansk Region and one over the Kaluga Region" between 9:30 am and 12:00 pm Moscow Time (0630 - 0900 GMT), said the ministry.

It added that 20 more fixed-wing drones were destroyed within the following two hours -- eight over Bryansk, seven over Smolensk, three over Kursk and two over Kaluga.

The ministry also said that its forces have taken control of the settlements of Kleban-Byk and Sredneye (Serednje) in the Donetsk region.

"Thanks to the decisive operations carried out by units of the Southern Group of Forces, the settlement of Kleban-Byk in the Donetsk has been liberated," it said.

The Western Group of Forces also "freed the settlement of Sredneye (Serednje) in the Donetsk," it added.
