Three golds, one bronze: HK secures another World Games medal

Hong Kong secured the fourth medal at the World Games in Chengdu on Sunday, a day after clinching two gold medals in wushu.

Harry Cheng Chun-hin clinched a bronze medal in the men's wake surf skim final with 59 points, bringing the city’s medal count to four with three golds and one bronze.

“Wakesurfing is a new event at TWG (the World Games) 2025. Cheng claimed a medal in his debut on this world stage speaks volumes about Hong Kong's growing prowess in water sports,” said Wong Po-kee, chef de mission of the Hong Kong, China delegation.

In the women's wake surf skim final, Kate Wu finished fourth with 39.33 points.

Hong Kong delegation has captured three gold medals so far at the World Games, breaking the record of one gold and four bronzes at the 2022 edition in Alabama, the United States.

On Saturday, Lydia Sham Hui-yu secured her first World Games gold with 29.260 points in the wushu women's changquan - jianshu - qiangshu combined event, while Anthony Yeung Chung-hei edged out Japan's Tomohiro Araya by 0.05 points to take gold with 19.526 points in the wushu men's taijijian combined event.

“Lydia Sham performed at the highest level in Changquan, Jianshu, and Qiangshu, demonstrating her ability across all three di    sciplines. Her skills and resilience were truly impressive, and her victory is well-deserved,” said Wong.

This victory not only marked the delegation's third gold medal at the World Games 2025 but also the second gold claimed by the wushu team, Wong added.

Yeung, the bronze medalist at the previous World Games, had once again delivered a strong and determined performance, said Wong, adding that he delivered his moves with a harmonious blend of softness and strength, powered by profound internal energy.

On Friday, Grace Lau Mo-sheung claimed the women's kata gold in karate, delivering the Hong Kong delegation's first gold and only its second in the World Games history - and its first-ever in a women's event.

The World Games 2025, taking place from Aug 7 to 17, features more than 200 medal events across 34 sports disciplines. Hong Kong athletes are competing in seven sports, including air sports, billiards, karate, orienteering, squash, water skiing, and wushu.
