Shi Yuqi advances at badminton China Open

CHANGZHOU, China - Chinese ace Shi Yuqi powered past compatriot Weng Hongyang to reach the second round of the men's singles at the badminton China Open on Wednesday.

Building on his momentum from last week's Japan Open victory, the third-seeded Shi battled through a competitive opening game before securing a 21-16, 21-11 win.

"Both of us gave it our all. It was an intense match. I felt I was in great form," Shi said after the match.

In the women's singles, defending champion Wang Zhiyi of China delivered a commanding performance, defeating Hsu Wen-chi of Chinese Taipei 21-16, 21-9. Top seed An Se-young of South Korea rallied from one game down to beat Michelle Li of Canada 13-21, 21-3, 21-10.

Meanwhile, in the women's doubles, China's Jia Yifan and Zhang Shuxian mounted a strong comeback after dropping the first game to overcome Japan's Nami Matsuyama and Chiharu Shida 21-23, 21-11, 21-11. Top-seeded Liu Shengshu and Tan Ning of China also cruised into the second round with a 21-10, 21-14 victory over Australia's Gronya Somerville and Angela Yu.

The mixed doubles second seeds Jiang Zhenbang and Wei Yaxin of China eased past Canada's Kevin Lee and Josephine Wu 21-14, 21-11.
