HONG KONG – The overall consumer prices in Hong Kong rose by 1.4 percent year-on-year in June, which is slightly smaller than the corresponding increase of 1.9 percent in the previous month, official data showed on Monday.

The smaller rise in June was attributable to the decrease in the government's provision of electricity charges subsidy in June 2024 compared with May 2024, the Census and Statistics Department said in a statement.

Netting out the effects of all government's one-off relief measures, the year-on-year rate of increase in the underlying inflation rate in June was 1.0 percent, the same as that in the previous month, according to the department’s data.

On a seasonally adjusted basis, the average monthly rate of change in the underlying inflation rate for the three-month period ending June 2025 was 0.0 percent, and that for the three-month period ending May 2025 was -0.1 percent, the data showed, adding that the corresponding rates of change were both 0.1 percent after netting out the effects of all government's one-off relief measures.

The underlying inflation rate rose by 1.7 percent over a year earlier for the first half of 2025 as a whole, while the rate increased by 1.8 percent for the second quarter of 2025, according to the department’s data.

Compared with underlying inflation rate in June 2024, year-on-year increases in prices were recorded in June for housing (2.8 percent), transport (1.9 percent), electricity, gas and water (1.6 percent), alcoholic drinks and tobacco (1.4 percent), meals out and takeaway food (1.4 percent), miscellaneous goods (1.3 percent), and miscellaneous services (1.0 percent).

On the other hand, year-on-year decreases were recorded in June 2025 for clothing and footwear (-4.1 percent), durable goods (-2.5 percent), and basic food (-0.4 percent).

A government spokesperson said consumer price inflation stayed modest in June.

The underlying inflation rate increased by 1.0 percent over a year earlier, same as the preceding month, with price pressures on various major components contained in general, said the government spokesperson.

The city’s overall inflation should remain modest in the near term, as pressures from domestic costs and external prices should stay broadly in check, the spokesperson added.
