Travelers from the Chinese mainland visiting Hong Kong can now create and top up their Octopus cards with WeChat Pay, the digital payment platform owned by internet giant Tencent, further facilitating cross-boundary payment.

WeChat Pay announced on Thursday that it has partnered with Octopus to allow mainland visitors with iPhones to use such functions.

The move is expected to further improve mainland travelers’ cross-boundary payment experience by freeing them from the need to exchange Hong Kong dollars and queue for top-ups.

The initiative follows a previous collaboration in October in which the two companies launched a WeChat mini program to allow mainland travelers using Android phones to top up their Octopus cards through WeChat Pay.
