One way to explore Shenzhen is through the “Shenzhen photo spots”, a program initiated by the municipal government to highlight locations that reflect the history, innovation, and spirit of this dynamic southern Chinese metropolis.
So far, 17 spots have been designated, highlighting scenes from the traditional Hakka houses in Gankeng Townlet (甘坑古镇) and the neon lights of the maze-like Wenheyou (文和友) market to the engaging slogan wall at Liuxian Boulevard (留仙大道) and the geometric architectural collage of Diwang Tower (地王大厦).
Blue lines on the ground and a plaque declaring “Shenzhen photo spot” guide visitors to the best vantage points for photography.
Here are some of the spots that can be accessed via the metro:
Houhai Bridge (后海大桥)
The photo spot at Houhai Bridge features seaside skyscrapers set against the backdrop of Shenzhen Bay. During the day, the greenery along the eco-corridor of Talent Park (人才公园) harmonizes beautifully with the towering structures, blending nature and modernity. At night, the coordinated light show of the high-rises transforms the area into a dazzling “cyber-city”.
Getting there
Exit M, Houhai (后海) Station, Shenzhen Metro Line 2 or 11.
Guangming Culture & Art Center (光明文化艺术中心)
This architectural complex consists of five zones: the art museum, performance center, library, urban planning exhibition hall, and cultural space. Its entrance features a cave-like atrium, creating an eye-like visual effect with the reflections from a pool, earning it the nickname “Eye of Guangming”.
Getting there
Exit B, Fenghuang Town (凤凰城) Station, Shenzhen Metro Line 6.
The Footbridge at the Red Cube (红立方天桥)
The Red Cube, a striking red structure, houses museums, a library, and a large-scale bookstore, serving as a cultural hub for Longgang District. While the Red Cube itself is a captivating photography subject, camera enthusiasts have also discovered unique perspectives from the footbridge connecting it to the nearby Shimao Department Store (世贸百货). The roof of the footbridge features a net-like design with interconnected, curved beams that create a lattice effect, providing an interesting contrast to the surrounding scenery and casting dappled light when the sun shines.
Getting there
Exit D, Longcheng Square (龙城广场) Station, Shenzhen Metro Line 3.
Wenheyou (文和友)
Wenheyou on Jiefang Road (解放路) captures the essence of 1990s Shenzhen by recreating streets lined with shops, diners, and video halls – complete with period signage and items – in an old building. The juxtaposition of Wenheyou’s nostalgic neon lights, the railway flyover, and ultra-modern architecture in the distance illustrates Shenzhen’s evolution from a sleepy backwater to an economic powerhouse since 1979.
Getting there
Exit G, Laojie (老街) Station, Shenzhen Metro Line 1.
