A signing ceremony was held on Friday for the Convention on the Establishment of the International Organization for Mediation (IOMed) in the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region.

Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi, Hong Kong Chief Executive John Lee Ka-chiu, and senior representatives from 60 countries and regions and 20 global organizations attended the event, marking the establishment of the world's first intergovernmental legal organization dedicated to resolving international disputes through mediation.

In 2022, China, along with nearly 20 other countries, initiated the establishment of the IOMed.

Speaking at the ceremony, Lee said the organization will provide a pathway for countries to resolve international disputes based on mutual respect and understanding, which is "increasingly important amid mounting geopolitical tensions".

A global forum on international mediation was scheduled to be held later in the day, with the speakers set to discuss topics such as the mediation of disputes among countries and the mediation of international investment and commercial disputes.
