MADRID - American tennis star Serena Williams has been nominated as the winner of the Princess of Asturias Award for Sports for 2025.
The winner of 23 Grand Slam tournaments, who is an icon in the game of tennis, follows the footsteps of other winners, such as Spanish badminton player Carolina Marin, distance runner, Eliud Kipchoge, the Olympic Refugee Foundation and skier Lindsey Vonn, in winning arguably the most prestigious awards given on a yearly basis in Spain.
The Princess of Asturias Awards are given in eight categories (Sports, Concord, Communication and Humanities, Literature, Social Sciences, Arts, Technical and Scientific Research and International Cooperation), with the awards given in a ceremony held in the city of Oviedo in the region of Asturias in October.
The jury, who gave the 2025 Sports Award to Serena Williams, "one of the greatest tennis players in the history of the sport," and highlighted that not only has she won 73 singles titles and four Olympic gold medals, but that "in addition to her extraordinary sporting career and competitive spirit, Serena Williams has always been a staunch advocate for gender equality and equal opportunities between men and women in sports as well as in society in general."
