HONG KONG – Since the implementation of the national security law in the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region, the society has reached a consensus on safeguarding national security, said the city’s police commissioner, Chow Yat-ming.

Chow, speaking to the media just over a month after taking office, emphasized that Hong Kong must continuously reinforce its national security defenses and resolutely counter all forms of interference and sabotage. The Hong Kong Police Force will steadfastly fulfill its duty to uphold national security, ensuring the city's long-term prosperity and stability, he said.

On the day he assumed office as commissioner, Chow outlined three key priorities: safeguarding national security and raising public awareness of national security, advancing smart policing by leveraging technology to enhance operational efficiency, and strengthening team culture to foster a greater sense of belonging.

“As part of the country, it is only natural for Hong Kong to enact laws to protect national security," he said, adding that the HKPF is collaborating with districts and schools across the territory to conduct national security education programs, with a particular focus on helping the younger generation develop a correct understanding of national security.

Chow's 30-year career in the police force has witnessed the innovative development of Hong Kong's policing. Today, technology-driven solutions have become a new hallmark of the HKPF, with multiple smart policing initiatives achieving significant results and becoming powerful tools in maintaining Hong Kong's safety.

These include a newly launched pilot scheme for operational deployment of drones, which enables automated and routine drone patrols for the first time, a locally developed emergency rescue app, and another app to help people guard against scams.

The HKPF is revitalizing its culture to inspire new energy. When discussing police culture, Chow said that the force will uphold and promote its fine traditions while continuously strengthening officers' sense of professional pride and sense of mission.

Police will continue to reinforce this pride through historical education, professional training, and public engagement, transforming it into a powerful driving force for serving Hong Kong, he said.

“My goal has never changed: to ensure Hong Kong remains one of the safest cities in the world,” said Chow.
