Hong Kong Customs on Thursday foiled a drug trafficking attempt, seizing approximately 24 kilograms of suspected cocaine with an estimated value of HK$19 million ($2.43 million) at the Hong Kong International Airport.

The suspected cocaine was found in the possession of a 20-year-old male passenger who had arrived from Los Angeles, the United States, during a routine inspection. Officers discovered the substance concealed within snacks packaging inside the man's check-in suitcase.

The man was arrested on the spot and later charged with one count of trafficking in a dangerous drug. He was scheduled to appear at the West Kowloon Magistrates' Court later on Saturday.

In a statement, Hong Kong Customs reminded the public to remain vigilant and avoid participating in drug trafficking for financial gain.

Customs officials also emphasized that risk-based screening measures will continue, with particular attention given to passengers arriving from high-risk regions.

Under the Dangerous Drugs Ordinance, drug trafficking is a serious offense in Hong Kong and can earn offenders a maximum penalty of HK$5 million in fines and life imprisonment.
