Hospital: HK resident among 20 in ICU from turbulence-hit flight

BANGKOK - Twenty passengers, including a Hong Kong resident, from the Singapore airliner that experienced severe turbulence and made an emergency landing in Bangkok remained in intensive care units, according to a Thai hospital.

The Samitivej Srinakarin Hospital said in a statement that 104 people on the Singapore Airlines flight SQ321 from London to Singapore were injured and received treatment at the hospital and other medical facilities.

The 20 patients in intensive care included six British nationals, six Malaysians, three Australians, two Singaporeans, and one each from New Zealand, the Philippines, and the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region, according to the hospital

Adinun Kittiratanapaibool, director of the hospital, said in a media briefing on Thursday that there were no life-threatening cases among those in intensive care.

"The number of patients in ICU remain the same," Adinun said. "The meaning of those in ICU are those that need close attention."

Of the 40 people on the flight still under treatment, 22 patients have spinal cord injuries and six have brain and skull injuries. The oldest patient is 83 years old and the youngest a two-year-old child who suffered a concussion, he added.

One passenger died of a suspected heart attack and dozens were injured after the Boeing 777-300ER jet, carrying 211 passengers and 18 crew members, encountered severe turbulence en route and was forced to land at Suvarnabhumi Airport in Thailand's capital Bangkok on Tuesday.
