China Daily duo honored at business journalism awards

China Daily Hong Kong edition scooped a gold and a silver medal at the annual business news awards competition organized by Hang Seng University of Hong Kong (HSUHK) on Thursday.

Chai Hua, deputy editor of business news, won gold in the “Best Greater Bay Area Business News Reporting (Text)” with her September 2022 feature “Qianhai spruces up”. Keeping abreast of the development of the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area, Chai made a detailed analysis of the Qianhai plan, released in 2021 to better tap into the advantages of Guangdong-Hong Kong cooperation. The story, covering the insights of experts, officials and young entrepreneurs, probed the current priorities of the Qianhai plan as well as its ongoing exploration of new models.

President of HSUHK Simon Ho Shun-man lauded the contributions the winners have made, saying that in the face of the COVID-19 onslaught on the economy and society in the past three years      

Oswald Chan Wai-kit, who has enjoyed a glittering 30-year career in journalism, bagged silver in the “Best Business News Reporting (Text)” for his November 2022 feature entitled “HKEX to offer high-integrity carbon trading”. Enriched with sound data, comprehensive interviews and in-depth analysis, the coverage focused on carbon trading, and pointed to possible directions to eradicate unreasonable moves in the carbon trading market.

Speaking at the awards ceremony, Deputy Financial Secretary Michael Wong Wai-lun said that the role of journalists should not be undervalued, adding that despite the emergence of new technologies like ChatGPT, the technologies should be used to empower journalists. 

President of HSUHK Simon Ho Shun-man lauded the contributions the winners have made, saying that in the face of the COVID-19 onslaught on the economy and society in the past three years, journalists have remained steadfast in their professionalism, providing the public with accurate and diversified reporting and analysis in an objective manner. 

“Reporting on the Greater Bay Area is an exhilarating experience. It’s a dynamic economic hub full of opportunities and challenges that affect the Hong Kong economy and businesses,” Chai said, adding that she enjoys exploring GBA news. “For journalists, it’s our duty to uncover and report on the critical issues that matter to the region and its people. I’m committed to continuing to produce high-quality journalism that serves the public interest of Hong Kong.”  

Expressing his hope of enhancing the role of business journalism on Hong Kong’s economic and financial development, Chan said, “I hope this article can inspire more ideas from other business news reporters on studying how to implement carbon trading in Hong Kong, in a bid to fortify Hong Kong’s role as a global green finance hub.”

Both Chai and Chan expressed their gratitude to colleagues and editors at China Daily Hong Kong edition, as well as all interviewees, for their support in producing the award-winning works.

The HSUHK’s Business Journalism Awards competition, now in its seventh year, recognizes outstanding reporting on business, economic and financial issues. This year marks the first time since the COVID-19 outbreak that an in-person awards ceremony has been held. 

More than 300 entries in nine categories were submitted by candidates from newspapers, television and radio stations, magazines, as well as online media organizations, for this year’s awards.
