COVID: HK records 7,793 cases, 26 deaths

HONG KONG – Hong Kong’s health authorities on Monday reported a total of 7,793 daily coronavirus infections, including 7,188 local cases, as 26 more COVID patients passed away.

The city’s daily COVID-related death count of 26 for Monday is also the highest since April 18, 2022.

Among Monday’s 605 imported cases, 396 were identified at Hong Kong International Airport, 165 between days 1 and 3, and the remaining 44 from day 4 to day 7, according to a statement by the Centre for Health Protection (CHP).

Director of Building Clarice Yu Po-mei has tested positive for COVID-19 through a rapid antigen test, said a spokesman for the Buildings Department.

As of Monday, the Public Health Laboratory Services Branch (PHLSB) had identified 224 cases of sub-lineage XBB, six of XBD, eight of BA.2.75.2, seven of BA.4.6, 12 of BF.7 and 34 of BQ.1.1 among imported cases, said the CHP.

Also, 80 cases of sub-lineage XBB, 16 of XBD, one of BA.2.75.2, two of BF.7 and 102 of BQ.1.1 were detected among local infections.

So far, the pandemic has claimed the lives of 10,505 people in Hong Kong during the fifth wave, or 10,718 individuals since the pandemic started, the CHP added.

Meanwhile, 2,721 COVID patients are being treated at public hospitals. They included 322 new admissions, 294 requiring oxygen therapy, and 21 needing ventilator support, said the Hospital Authority in a separate statement.

The HA said 67 COVID patients are in serious condition and 61 patients in critical condition, including 16 in intensive care.

In the past week, 341 residents of elderly care homes were hospitalized for COVID-19, or higher than 299 hospitalized in the third week of Nov and the 241 in the second week.
