MOSCOW / TEHRAN  - Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov said Tuesday that both Russia and Iran support a fast resumption of the full implementation of the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action, or the Iran nuclear deal.

Moscow is waiting for Washington to return to the legal framework of the agreement and lift its sanctions that not only hurt Iran but also other countries, Lavrov said during a briefing here following talks with visiting Iranian Foreign Minister Hossein Amir Abdollahian.

Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov refuted the allegation that Moscow is slowing down the revival of the Iran nuclear deal, adding that Washington itself wants to shift the blame onto others because of its own indecisiveness

During the bilateral meeting of the Iranian and Russian delegations on Tuesday, Abdollahian welcomed Russia's "constructive efforts in Vienna to help reach an agreement on the lifting of sanctions on Iran."

Abdollahian expressed his hope that the United States would abandon its "exorbitant demands" so that all parties participating in the Vienna talks would be able to reach a consensus.

He said the ball is now in the US court to ensure a successful conclusion of the Vienna talks.

"If Washington responds to the few remaining important issues and does not waste time anymore, Vienna talks can be concluded soon," Abdollahian said.

Iran has held eight rounds of talks in the Austrian capital of Vienna with major signatory parties, including Russia, China, France, Britain and Germany, in a bid to revive the 2015 Iranian nuclear pact, from which the former US government under President Donald Trump unilaterally pulled out in 2018.

Abdollahian described Russia's approach to the Vienna talks over the past 11 months as "constructive," expressing confidence that this approach would continue until a good and credible agreement is reached.

He also pointed to his country's determination to develop relations with neighboring countries, including Russia, as a main priority for Iranian foreign policy.

"The process of developing relations with neighbors and Russia will continue independent of any third factor or international developments and regardless of the outcome of the negotiations in Vienna," he said.
