LegCo head calls for good governance at end-of-term dinner

HONG KONG - Legislative Council President Andrew Leung Kwan-yuen on Monday expressed the hope that the executive authorities and the Legislative Council will work together to promote good governance.

He made the remarks at the end-of-term dinner for the sixth LegCo held in the Dining Hall of the LegCo Complex Monday evening. 

Chief Executive Carrie Lam Cheng Yuet-ngor was among more than 100 guests attending the dinner. Other guests included Executive Council members, senior government officials and LegCo members.

In his opening remarks, Leung said the sixth LegCo had encountered many unprecedented challenges. Despite the difficulties, lawmakers "have stayed true to the original aspiration of serving the public when deliberating on and approving the legislative and funding proposals relating to people's livelihood," he added.

He stressed that good policies can be implemented in full as long as both the government officials and lawmakers listen and accept views.

"I sincerely hope that the executive authorities and the LegCo will work together to promote good governance," Leung said.

"With checks and balances and mutual operation of the two branches, Hong Kong will scale new heights with sustained stability and prosperity." 

He also expressed gratitude to the LegCo Secretariat for its impartial and professional support.
