GHAZNI - At least 30 policemen were killed and more than 20 others were wounded after a suicide car bomb attack hit a military camp in Ghazni city, capital of Afghanistan's eastern Ghazni province on Sunday, a local official confirmed.

Those killed and wounded were all military personnel. The camp homes a battalion of Afghan National Army (ANA).

"Some 30 killed and 21 wounded were admitted to a main hospital in Ghazni city following an explosion this morning," Zahir Shah Nikmal, spokesman for the provincial public health directorate, told Xinhua.

The number of casualties may change, he said.

The explosion occurred when a suicide bomber rammed an explosive-laden hijacked military vehicle to a military camp along a road connecting Ghazni city to neighboring Dih Yak district Sunday morning, a security official told Xinhua anonymously.

"Those killed and wounded were all military personnel. The camp homes a battalion of Afghan National Army (ANA). The facility was belonging to police forces in the past, but now it is converted to a battalion of ANA and all the victims were ANA soldiers," he said.

Earlier reports said that the killed and wounded were police personnel.

The blast sent a column of thick smoke into the sky and triggered panic in Qala-e-Joz, an area on the outskirts of the city, local government spokesman Wahadullah Jumazada told Xinhua.

Additional security forces reached the site following the attack, the spokesman added.

No group has claimed responsibility for the attack, but local officials blamed Taliban militants for the attack.

The province has been the scene of heavy clashes in recent years as Taliban militants attempted to seize more land and consolidate their position in the mountainous region.
