BEIJING – China has voiced grave concern Wednesday after parts of the THAAD anti-missile defense system were moved into the Republic of Korea (ROK) for deployment.

Beijing urged Washington and Seoul to withdraw the equipment and stop the deployment, Foreign Ministry spokesperson Geng Shuang said at a daily press briefing.

The deployment of THAAD anti-missile defense system will damage strategic balance in the region and worsen the tense situation on the Korean Peninsula, he said.

It will do no good for the denuclearization of the Korean Peninsula and threaten regional peace and stability, added Geng.

The deployment goes against the efforts made by all parties concerned to settle the issues through dialogues and severely sabotage China's security and strategic interests, Geng said.

"China will firmly take necessary actions to safeguard its own interests," Geng added.

The ROK said on Wednesday that key parts of the contentious U.S. missile defense system had been installed a day after the Democratic People's Republic of Korea (DPRK) showed off its military power, Associated Press reports.

The work to set up THAAD within this year has angered DPRK, China and Russia.
